Tours Slated at New Career Technology Training Center
The newest facility of Garrett College, the Career Technology Training Center located in the Northern Garrett Industrial Park in Accident, will be open to the public for tours on Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tours will be conducted by Continuing Education/Workforce Development staff members, who will be available to answer questions about the center and its program offerings, as well as questions regarding the Occupational Scholarship. Refreshments will be available and WKHJ will be doing a remote broadcast from the facility. For directions to the facility or questions individuals may contact the CEWD office at 301-387-3069.

Courses and programs offered at the CTTC will be primarily workforce preparation and workforce development, according to Julie Yoder, Interim Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. “Many of the courses will lead to industry recognized certification. Classes to be offered at the CTTC this fall include Welding I, Welding II, Welding III, Adult Basic Education and GED preparation, Introduction to Lab View, Lab View II Rookie to Robotics, AutoCAD, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Residential HVAC System Design,” Yoder said.

The renovated 16,000 square foot space in the former Phenix Technology building houses a welding lab, electronics and automation lab, three classrooms, a conference room, and administrative space. A second phase of the CTTC project is scheduled to begin in the fall, 2010. Upon its completion the CTTC facility will be equipped with classrooms to accommodate courses in the areas of alternative energy, technology and automation, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and masonry. The courses will be implemented on a cyclical basis based on workforce demand and interest.

In addition to scheduled courses, employers will have the opportunity to use the space to conduct in-house training programs.

Garrett College Introduces New Scholarship Program
Garrett County residents have benefited from the Garrett County Academic Scholarship since its development by the Garrett County Commissioners in the Fall of 2006. The Academic Scholarship applied to students seeking degrees from Garrett College.

Phase II in the form of the Garrett County Occupational Scholarship (GCOS) is now available for students attending Garrett College. It is for students pursuing training opportunities that lead to an industry-recognized certification rather than a degree.

Students in the 2010 graduating class of Northern or Southern High Schools are eligible for this scholarship as well as adults earning a GED during the current year. Students who completed a home school program during the 2009-2010 academic year are also eligible if their curriculum was approved by the Garrett County Board of Education.

Welding I, II, and III. Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B), Certified Nursing Assistant, and Class A or Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Courses offered in the Spring Semester that will qualify for the GCOS include Office Technology, Small Engine Repair, Medical Coding and Billing, Medical Transcription, and Phlebotomy.

To apply for a GCOS scholarship, persons may call Garrett College at 301-387-3069 or visit www.garrettcollege.edu/GCSP.
