Kelsey Birmingham has recently been awarded the prestigious and extremely competitive Two-Year Transfer Scholarship to Bucknell University following her graduation from Garrett College on May 20, where she will earn an Associate in Arts for Arts and Sciences – Psychology Concentration. The scholarship covers tuition for two years of full-time enrolment at Bucknell University, a private liberal arts institution in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

As part of the transfer scholarship requirements, Kelsey participated in the rigorous Summer Scholars Program in 2016. During that six-week academic program at Bucknell University, Kelsey excelled in two writing-intensive college courses, The Biology of Stress and The Psychology of Attraction and Close Relationships. She maintained above average grades in her two courses, all while residing on-campus and participating in social cohort activities every week. Kelsey will continue her studies in psychology at Bucknell University this fall in pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree.

“I had no doubts that Kelsey would shine while at Bucknell. She made an enormously positive impression on the faculty and staff during her summer experience, and I am extremely delighted that she is being afforded the opportunity to continue there this fall,” said Ashley Ruby, Coordinator of Advising and Academic Support at Garrett College. “Kelsey is one of Garrett College’s brightest and most ambitious students. She leads in the classroom and is incredibly active on-campus as well; succeeding in her multiple roles of student, SGA president, peer tutor, community volunteer, and work study.”

The Bucknell Community College Scholars program is designed for high-achieving, low- to moderate income community college students who aim to earn their associate’s degree and wish to take their education further. “Garrett College is proud to be one of five community college partners of this program,” Ruby stated.

After meeting the academic and financial criteria, potential scholars must apply and attend the summer program immediately prior to community college graduation. Students then return to the community college to complete the associate degree, and are eligible to apply for the Two-Year Transfer Scholarship to Bucknell University.
