2017 GC Offering Summer English/Reading and Math Refresher Courses

Registration is currently underway for the 2017 summer and fall sessions at Garrett College. GC is, once again, taking steps to ensure that students are properly placed in their entry-level math and English courses, giving them the best possible start to a college career. Multiple studies have found that students who are required to take developmental coursework are far less likely to persist to graduation; therefore, it is important that the College take measures aimed at giving students the best chance to start at college-level coursework in math and English.

Helping students avoid taking developmental coursework provides them with the opportunity to complete their program of study and graduate more quickly, in addition to cost-savings. “The Summer refresher courses have greatly impacted the success of students in being college ready.  For students who may have not had a High School math class for several months, a one-day refresher brings most of that information back to remembrance and a student can skip one or both of the remedial classes saving time and money,” said Andrew Harvey, Assistant Director of Financial Aid for Technical Services at Garrett College.

All new students at Garrett College will be given the option to take either a one-day face-to-face or an online refresher course prior to taking the placement test for the first time. Students may opt to take these refresher courses if they feel they will not perform well, are facing test anxiety, or feel they can do better with help up-front.

Additionally, students will be required to take either the face-to-face or the online refresher if they choose to re-test. Participating in one of the intervention methods will be the student’s “fee” for re-taking the placement test.

Garrett College will offer 15 (nine math and six English/reading) sessions throughout the summer with a maximum of 15 students per session. Sessions will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end with the testing to begin at 2 p.m. Participants will receive a 30-minute lunch break; lunch is provided.

English/ReadingRefresher sessions will be held on the following dates at the McHenry campus:  June 27, July 11, 18 and 25, and August 1 and 8. The cost to attend is $50 per student due at the time of registration. Cost includes 5 instructional hours, lunch, and Accuplacer placement test. **Register by contacting Continuing Education and Workforce Development at 301-387-3069.

Math Refresher sessions will be held on the following dates at the McHenry campus: June 12, 19 and 26, July 10, 17, 24 and 31, and August 7 and 14. There is no cost to attend a math refresher - funded by the First In The World Maryland Mathematics Reform Initiative grant program; 5 instructional hours, lunch, and paper-based placement test included. **Register by contacting the Advising & Academic Success Center at 301-387-3715.

Mike Nedrow, adjunct faculty of developmental mathematics, stated, “The math refresher helps ensure that new Garrett College students are correctly placed into the appropriate math class based on current skill level. Students are never penalized for taking the math refresher. It’s just a great opportunity to see if they should advance one or more section in our math sequence.” The same can be said of the English refresher. Both refresher programs have shown perpetual success in prior years. “If you are at all hesitant – just give it a try. We are here to help you and make your first steps at Garrett College positive,” notes Nedrow.
