Financial Assistance Opportunities for Workforce Development Programs

Financial assistance is available to eligible non-credit students who are interested in pursuing training that leads to employment, licensure, industry certification or job skill enhancement through Garrett College’s Continuing Education & Workforce Development (CEWD) division.

Garrett College’s Continuing Education & Workforce Development division awards over $100,000 in scholarships annually as a result of funding from a variety of sources, including the Board of Garrett County Commissioners, local agencies, and private donors through the Garrett College Foundation.

Full and partial scholarship are available based on the applicant’s residency, educational goals and financial needs. For best consideration, students are encouraged to apply early!

Our programs do not qualify for Federal Student Financial Aid. Therefore, students do not need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for noncredit courses or programs.

Garrett County Scholarship Program

The Board of Garrett County Commissioners recognizes that the County’s future economic well-being is dependent on having an educated, skilled workforce that is prepared to compete successfully for jobs in an increasingly competitive, global economy. Therefore, recent graduates can apply for the Garrett County Scholarship Program (GCSP) that covers the tuition and fees of eligible, in-county, high school graduates meeting certain criteria in a given timeframe.

Other individuals that may be eligible for this funding are:

  • High school seniors that are dual-enrolled
  • Graduating from a certified homeschool program
  • Graduating from a certified, state-approved non-public school located and operating in the county
  • Recipients of a General Education Diploma (GED)

Garrett College Occupational Scholarship

The Occupational Scholarship is an extension of the Garrett County Scholarship Program, providing funding for eligible students to obtain occupational training in courses leading to industry-recognized certification.

Eligible students are defined as Garrett County residents who will graduate from a Garrett County High School in June of the current year, received their GED during the prior academic year (but prior to June), participated in an acknowledged Home School program, or are current high school students eligible for dual-enrollment. The Occupational Scholarship funds tuition and fees for eligible students who successfully complete their course/program. Awards are based on available funding.

The Occupational Scholarship is a component of the Garrett County Commissioners Scholarship Program that provides funding to high school graduates who wish to pursue occupational training rather than a “traditional” college education.

Garrett College Noncredit Scholarships

Through the generosity of donors, the Garrett College Foundation is able to provide scholarships for Workforce Development programs. In addition, CEWD has been awarded various scholarship opportunities from sources such as the Maryland Higher Education Commission Workforce Development Sequence Scholarship, and the Maryland Motor Truck Association. Criteria varies based on the scholarship and interested students should complete the Workforce Application form noting their interest to determine eligibility.

Additional Information on Scholarships

  • All workforce programs require a $25 non-refundable application fee which cannot be paid with scholarship funds.
  • The student is also responsible for any program fees, tests, or materials which are not covered by his/her scholarship before receiving their award.

Application Deadline

Scholarship applications must be submitted at least three weeks prior to start of selected program for consideration.

Applicaton Method

Complete a Garrett College Workforce application (at least three weeks prior to program start date) available online with each program listing at www.garrettcollege.edu/cewd.

Withdrawal Policy for Workforce Development Programs

It is the student’s responsibility to withdraw from a course that he/she cannot attend. Please note that failure to attend at least 75% of the course sessions, or failure to complete assigned coursework, may result in the termination of funding; as a result, the student will be charged for the entire cost of the course.
